Riddles
Verse 1:
A night in the city when everyone sleeps,
Through the abandoned allies and cobblestone streets
There wanders a singer who plays for the ghosts,
The vagabond spirits, and heavenly host
With calloused old fingers and weathered six string
Playing old songs that nobody sings
Chanting his poems to invisible friends
Who listen until his opera ends
And alone in the darkness with quivering hands
He cries like a dog to the moon
He cries like a dog to the moon
Chorus:
And he’s singing his heart out in riddles
For there’s no other possible way
To tell you the things that he’s always been dying to say
Oh you tell him that he’s going crazy
But that statement’s just partially true
He’s just falling to pieces like all the great lovers do
Verse 2:
Whoever thought life would have turned out like this?
Your youth and your innocence sold for a kiss
Love is a wild that no man can tame
And these priceless possessions were lost in that game
Time goes by slowly when isn’t fair
Living each day on the edge of despair
Words won’t express how you’re feeling inside
The bitter emotions, the tears that you’ve cried
So alone by her window with tears in her eyes
She cries like a dog to the moon
She cries like a dog to the moon
Chorus:
And she’s singing her heart out in riddles
For there’s no other possible way
To tell you the things that she’s always been dying to say
Oh you tell her that she’s going crazy
But that statement’s just partially true
She’s just falling to pieces like all the great lovers do
Verse 3:
Thousands and thousands, as far as I see,
Thousands of people who have always believed
That a heart that is broken is better than none
So they bear their misfortune till their time here is done
Call it misjudgment, a weak state of mind,
Reckless behavior, a curse of some kind
They won’t pay attention--they’ve been reassured
They know that their tears and their prayers have been heard
In a glorious choir of bittersweet tone
They cry like a dog to the moon
They cry like a dog to the moon
Chorus:
And they’re singing their heart out in riddles
For there’s no other possible way
To tell you the things that they’ve always been dying to say
Oh you tell ‘em that they’re going crazy
But that statement’s just partially true
They’re just falling to pieces like all the great lovers do
They’re just falling to pieces like all the great lovers do
